Algedi, or alpha Cap, is an optical double star which is the brightest star in Capricornus. This simply means that the two stars are so close together in the line of sight that they look as one. These stars can be seen by the naked eye, and have magnitudes of 3.5 and 4. This star means “the tail of the goat”. It can also be spelled Al Giedi and has an Arabic name of Alpha Capricorni.

Dabih is the left eye of the goat, the Arabic title being Al Sa’d al Dhabih which means “the lucky one of the slaughterers”. This is a magnitude 3 star associated with success in business when well placed, but if afflicted causes suspicion and the failure to reach ambitions. The right eye is represented by the star Oculus.

The heart and belly of the Goat are represented by the stars Armus and Castra respectively. These stars are said to have disagreeable natures, and that their prominence indicates destructiveness. Armus represents instability and a troublesome nature, while Castra is said to be of a destructive nature with an unbridled temper.

Deneb Algedi, Nashira and Dorsum are all in the tail of the goat, and they are said to have the power to destroy or help, depending upon their placement. Nashira has a magnitude of 3, while Dorsum’s magnitude is 4. Depending on the source, Dorsum may also represent the back of the goat.

Of course, these aren’t all of the stars in the Capricornus constellation, just the most notable. There are over 50 stars that make up this constellation.
